OUR FIRST HOME RUN
was a great event! A lovely September Saturday on the University of Portland campus, our "stars" Alberto Salazar and Fr. Joe Corpora leading our 5K Fun Run/Walk, lots of friends-new and old-running, walking, watching, helping. Each of us played a part, just as we each have a place in caring for those at end of life. Many of you guessed correctly that Alberto, with a time of 22:59, ran faster than Fr. Joe in 43:57. But remember, it was a dual challenge. Fr. Joe raised more money in donations and pledges. At this moment, still counting, we have made over $13,000. We will give you the official tally very soon but first we want to post the official times, so here you are. . .

on Sunday, All Souls' Day at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church 4pm (Nov 1)Vespers, or Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, the ancient Christian prayer sanctifying the entirety of the day. Beginning with a service of lighted candles, Vespers includes the chanting of Psalms and hymns, the proclamation of Sacred Scripture, and other prayers.
As we celebrate All Saints and All Souls Days in November, join us in this special Vespers to remember all those who have died. Bring to church or send us the written names of loved ones you want us to remember in our Book of Prayer Requests.

BUILDING OUR FIRST HOUSE
We have purchased a lot in Northeast Portland where we will build our first home. Numerous friends of Martha & Mary are donating hours of professional services in helping us design the house.
We are working to spread the word and to provide more and more people with the opportunity of making a difference for those at end of life. Here are some opportunities:
COMPANIONS IN VIGIL WITH THOSE WHO ARE DYING We are beginning our Compassionate Companions vigil program for residents of Porthaven Care Center in Northeast Portland. This program is modeled on No One Dies Alone developed by Sandra Clark, RN in Eugene. We are collaborating with the nursing home to provide volunteers to stay by the bedside of persons in their last 24-72 hours. Volunteers may come from all walks of life and will need no professional caregiving experience or credentials. Contact us for more information and to volunteer.
TEMPORARY CHAPEL In our temporary chapel provided by Catholic Charities and located near Providence Portland Medical Center, we maintain a Book of Prayer Requests and pray especially for those at end of life, for their loved ones and for those who grieve. Send us your prayer requests and contact us about joining us for prayer in the chapel.
END OF LIFE EDUCATION We speak with parishes and other groups on Advance Directives and other end of life issues. In Fall 2008 we will offer a comprehensive program with experienced presenters covering a wide range of concerns that people encounter at end of life. Contact us to arrange a program with your group.
